Like all families moving to a new school district we did our "homework" and researched the area for the best schools. Hickory continued to come to the top of the list and we chose a home based on those findings and word of mouth from others living in the area. However, upon enrolling we came to find out that although Hickory looks good on paper it is not necessarily any better than other high schools in the district. Hickory offers a nice campus with many academic options but it lacks a "thinking outside the box" mentality and diversity.

I love Hickory High School. I have two children in attendance and have finally found a place where I want to stay and let my kids graduate. It is not perfect but neither are my kids. I am very thankful for HIckory!

Hickory High School has a great group of students and teachers. The parent involvement is spectacular. The building looks normal from the outside but inside you will notice an amazing space. It's design lets in tons of natural light and the halls are clean and bright. You can see natural elements from every direction with the open air courtyard. Everyone at Hickory always seems so bright and cheerful even when you are the parent who didn't know what you were supposed to do. They help out, get it all fixed and your student is taken care of. The amazing thing is how well prepared my child seems. She knows exactly what's expected of her starting now as a freshmen and what she needs to do over the next 4 years. We are really excited to be at Hickory!

Hickory High School used to be the best , but in three years it's Great Schools rating has dropped from a 10 to a 7! The most noticeable change is the 13 point drop in SOL History scores and the other meausrable drops in core subject SOL scores. The principal spends too much time socializing with the staff and very little time monitoring the continual decline regarding academics. The Guidance Department is filled with less than enthusiastic counselors who do the bare minimum for the students. Security at the school is a joke, especially the police officer who is supposed to monitor the school yet is no where to be seen. The only bright spot is the Arts program.

My daughter graduated from Hickory June 2011. We had a great experience in this school. The teachers really connected with the students and went above and beyond to make sure the student got what they needed. My son is in Hickory Middle School and he just loves it there. I'm afraid if we have to move the next school won't come near in comparison with Hickory.

HHS has been a wonderful experience for my son and our family the last 4years. The administration seems to know all the kids (about 2000 for '11), as well as the parents that frequently volunteer here. My son attended HMS for 2&1/2 years and Dr. Koonce set a fine example for the students, faculty and parents. Mrs. Turner at HHS has her finger on the pulse of what's happening. VERY SAFE environment!! Scantron machine is in all the Chesapeake schools which helps keep our kids safe. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HICKORY HIGH SCHOOL!

My daughter just finished her Junior year at Hickory. Except for the guidance counseling which is a bit thin for college prep, I couldn't ask for a better school with great teachers, involved parents, awesome music department and extra curricular activities. Once Grassfield High School was opened the over crowding subsided.

The school is basically good. Rules are enforced and I feel my children are safe. There are way too many students for the staff. The guidance department in virtually non-existant. If you want a school where your child will get individual attention, look for a smaller school.

Outstanding high school in the Tidewater area of Virginia. Excels academically, musically and athletically.

I have two sons attending Hickory High School. This will be my oldest son's third year at HHS. There are a lot of students here, but it is always under control and the kids are very respectful of the rules. The courses available are awesome. One of my children is in all honors classes, the other child is in need of Special Services, through an IEP. Hickory meets all needs for all children- that I can attest to! They have a wonderful AP courseload for the super motivated students. HHS also provides exceptional Special Education resources. The teachers ALWAYS keep the communication lines open. The guidance department is always ready to assist no matter the need. The building is extremely clean and boasts all sorts of ammenities. I have nothing but praise for the dedicated staff and administrators at HHS!

I am actually a student at this school. I love it. The teachers are great, the band program (mainly the marching band) is very good, actually the music program in general. Yes it is a bit crowded, but only in certain areas. I would recommend this school to any parent.

Before moving to Hickory I thought that I would not like this school at all. After my freshmen year I loved it. The teachers were wonderful, the school overall had a lot of clubs and extra-curricular activities, the students were nice and it made you want to get up and go to school everyday. To me, the overcrowding wasn't an issue. It never bothered me until the last day of school when everyone just lumbered around the hallways. Most of the time you wont even notice it. This school is very disciplined. It is well kept and I would recomment it to anybody! I am looking forward to finishing out my High School years here.
